KAERAJAAN

Conveniently located at the Town Hall square at the heart of Tallinn’s medieval Old Town, this Estonian themed restaurant, Kaerajaan, has been named after a popular national folk dance.

The restaurant features a café on the main floor, a slightly more formal restaurant on the first floor and a lovely summer terrace overlooking the main square to combine a tasty meal and people-watching.

The décor is ethnic – most of the design elements and solutions are inspired by national patterns with warm cardigans and mittens surrounding the floor lamps, ceiling paintings inspired by Estonian belt ornaments and pictures of folk dancers with centuries-old limestone walls in the background. Do not miss the chimney-toilet - a restroom built into an old chimney stack!

The menu is based on traditional Estonian ingredients and local produce – Tallinn sprats, Baltic herrings, wild boar, elk, not to forget local mushrooms, berries, traditional rye bread, kama and honey beer - all prepared and served with a modern twist.

Kaerajaan is a delightful union of modern Estonian cuisine, great location and excellent service!

MEKK

Explore the fascinating Modern Estonian Cuisine where its rich history has mixed gastronomy components from Danish, Sweden, Russian and German cuisine together with its own unique nuances becoming ultimately enchanting and diverse phenomenon.

The principles of putting together a menu, Rene Uusmees, the chef of the restaurant has decided to honour the core values of culinary practices when preparing modern Estonian food. This is why modern Estonian cooking is based on the classical methods of preparing food, which have been characteristic to us and to our culture throughout the ages and which the restaurant improves by using modern technology and professional skills. All the raw produce used in modern Estonian dishes is extremely fresh and come, as much as possible, from Estonian ecological farms. The customers are informed already in the menu where Estonian cheeses, meat and fish have been used and the finishing touch to each meal is added by offering home-made bread served with genuine butter decked with salt flakes.

Healthiness is one of the key ingredients of high quality. In each season, the restaurant offers its customers food characteristic to that particular reason. Spring is the time to eat asparagus, spinach, nettle and sorrel. Summer is governed by fresh vegetables, cucumbers and tomatoes, berries from the garden as well as from the woods but also by pike and garfish. Autumn is characterized by mushrooms, apples, plums, sea-buckthorn berries, cloudberries and wild game. The winter menu is as crisp and cool as the weather outside, the main flavour of the season coming from local tinned produce. MEKK’s chef makes sure that the raw produce is fresh and seasonal and that the dishes served in the restaurant are seasoned with herbs and spices throughout the year.

Please contact us so we can book the best table for you for a memorable modern cuisine experience. For Magic Unica clients we can also arrange chef’s special greeting.
